Dear Beekeepers,

As we welcome the month of February, we are thrilled to announce that the beekeeping year has officially commenced! This marks an exciting time for all our members as we prepare to embark on a new season of tending to our beloved bees and nurturing our hives.

Seasonal Preparations

With the arrival of warmer weather, it is crucial for beekeepers to conduct a thorough inspection of their hives. Take this opportunity to assess the health of your colonies, evaluate the queen's egg-laying patterns, and ensure that adequate food stores are in place. Additionally, it's a prime time to clean and repair any equipment, as well as set up new hives for potential swarms. Ideally the temperature needs to be around 15°c (usually late March or early April) and the first inspection should be brief to avoid chilling the brood.

Hive Management

Proper hive management is key to a successful beekeeping year. As our bees become more active, be sure to regularly monitor for signs of swarming and overcrowding. This involves conducting routine hive checks, provision of supplementary feeding if necessary, and implementing swarm control measures to prevent loss of colonies.

Forage and Pollination

The blooming of various flora presents abundant forage opportunities for our bees. Take note of the seasonal flora in your area and ensure that your bees have access to a diverse range of nectar and pollen sources. Effective foraging will not only benefit the health of your colonies but also contribute to the pollination of local plants and crops.

Education and Networking

In line with our commitment to continuous learning and mutual support, we encourage all beekeepers to stay updated with the latest industry practices and guidelines. Engage in workshops, training programs, and informational sessions to further your knowledge and skills in beekeeping. Furthermore, don't underestimate the power of networking within our association. Share experiences, seek advice, and foster a sense of community among fellow beekeepers.

As we embark on this new beekeeping year, let us approach it with enthusiasm, dedication, and a deep-rooted passion for the well-being of our bees. The Sneem Beekeepers are here to support you every step of the way, and we eagerly anticipate a season filled with the sweet rewards of beekeeping.

Wishing you all a fruitful and fulfilling beekeeping year ahead!

Sincerely,
Conor O
